Stone Town

A Stone Town tour is a journey through the historic heart of Zanzibar, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It’s a captivating maze of narrow alleys, bustling markets, and grand buildings that tell the story of Swahili, Arab, Persian, Indian, and European influences.

Historic Buildings & Architecture :

  • House of Wonders (Beit al-Ajaib):The former palace of the Sultan, it was the first building in Zanzibar to have electricity and an elevator. It houses the Zanzibar National Museum of History & Culture
  • Old Fort (Ngome Kongwe): A 17th-century Portuguese fort used for defense and later as a prison. Now it hosts shops, a small museum, and an open-air theatre.
  • Sultan’s Palace (Beit al-Sahel): Also known as the People’s Palace, it was the main residence of the Sultan’s family. It’s now a museum showcasing royal history.
  • Old Dispensary : A beautifully restored building with ornate balconies, showcasing Indian architectural influence.

Significant Cultural & Historical Sites :

  • Freddie Mercury House :  The birthplace of the legendary Queen frontman (born Farrokh Bulsara). It’s now a small museum and a popular photo spot.
  • Anglican Cathedral & Slave Market Site :  Built on the site of the former slave market, this cathedral is a solemn and powerful memorial to Zanzibar’s dark history of the slave trade. The adjacent museum and memorial are essential visits.
  • Forodhani Gardens : A beautiful waterfront park that comes alive in the evening with the famous Forodhani Night Market  a must for trying local Zanzibari street food.and more information about Zanzibar
